Book Club Selection for July: For Labor, Race, and Liberty

June 15, 2011

Our book club selection for July is one where we will learn that an African-American man who lived in La Crosse around the turn of the 20th century made presidential history. The book, For Labor, Race, and Liberty: George Edwin Taylor, His Historic Run for the White House, and the Making of Independent Black Politics, by Bruce Mouser (146 pages), tells the story of how more than one hundred years before Barack Obama, George Edwin Taylor became the first African American ticketed as a political party’s nominee for president of the United States, running against Theodore Roosevelt in 1904. Born in the antebellum South to a slave and a freed woman, and orphaned as a child at the peak of the Civil War, Taylor spent several years homeless before boarding a Mississippi riverboat that dropped him in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Taken in by an African American farm family, Taylor attended a private school and eventually rose to prominence as the owner/editor of a labor newspaper and as a vocal leader in Wisconsin’s People’s Party. At a time when many African Americans felt allegiance to the Republican Party for its support of abolition, Taylor’s sympathy with the labor cause drew him first to the national Democratic Party and then to an African American party, the newly formed National Liberty Party, which in 1904 named him its presidential candidate.

Bruce L. Mouser follows Taylor’s life and career in Arkansas, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Florida, giving life to a figure representing a generation of African American idealists whose initial post-slavery belief in political and social equality in America gave way to the despair of the Jim Crow decades that followed. Outdoor Worship is June 19th

May 28, 2011

On June 19th we will gather in our “front lawn” rather than going down to Riverside Park. We hope you would help us invite our neighborhood, especially those in the high rises and apartments near our church. Bring lawn chairs and blankets. Bring sun screen and hats. There is shade near the church, and we will also put out chairs. And of course, if there is a rain-out, we’ll just move inside.

Invite friends and neighbors!

ELCA Youth Gathering Kick-Off Meeting May 14th

May 10, 2011

The next ELCA Youth Gathering is scheduled for July 18-22, 2012. We will have an informational meeting on Saturday, May 14th, at 10:00am, in the Fellowship Hall, for current 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th grade youth, their parents/guardians, and anyone interested in being an adult chaperone.

Why now? We need to start planning now because congregational leaders will be able to apply for financial assistance ($315 registration fee) on behalf of our young people (who would be unable to attend otherwise) beginning Sunday, May 15. The deadline for financial assistance is July 31, 2011 – or until the funds are depleted and the registration deadline is September 2012. You need the information now to decide if your youth will be participating and we need a head count estimate to start planning for a great trip! Questions, talk to Jessica or Pastor Mark.

Bike To Church on May 15th

May 10, 2011

Bike to Work Week is May 14-20! As part of Bike to Work Week, we also encourage community members to bike to their places of worship.

Bike to Work Week is a national event to encourage safe biking for fun and transportation, and to encourage motorists to share the road with bikes. The first Bike to Work Day was organized by the League in 1956 and has expanded into Bike to Work Week and National Bike Month.

The Driftless Region Bicycle Coalition’s Bike to Work Week activities are in support of that effort in the Driftless region by promoting: bike to work, to school, to worship and to shop. The mission of the Driftless Region Bicycle Coalition is “getting more people on bikes, more often by advocating for bicycling infrastructure and a dynamic bicycling culture.”

Find out more at the Driftless Region Bicycle Coalition website.
