November Book Club Selection: Saving CeeCee Honeycutt

Our book for November will be Saving CeeCee Honeycutt by Beth Hoffman. In Hoffman’s charming debut, Cecelia Rose (CeeCee) Honeycutt tells the story of her tragic life and the strong women who stepped in to save her. At age 12, CeeCee realizes her mother, flouncing around Willoughby, OH, in prom dresses and matching shoes, is crazy and the town’s laughingstock. Her father is never home, and nothing is going to change so CeeCee buries herself in books as an escape. But her true liberation comes after her mother’s tragic death when great-aunt Tootie sweeps CeeCee off to Savannah. There, a group of powerful, independent women offer the young girl love, laughter, and a new chance at life. World Community Day at Our Savior’s on Nov. 4th

Church Women United invites all women to attend the annual World Community Day at Our Saviors Lutheran Church. World Community Day relates the goals from Micah of justice and mercy to Jesus’ demand that we re-examine our own hypocrisy. Only then can action be unlocked. Past actions will inspire the women of today towards future action. We are invited to examine our approach to “unlocking action” in our communities.

Come join us on Friday, November 4th at 9:30 am. For only $5.00, you will be served a delicious meal from the superb “cooks” of OSLC; followed by a meaningful presentation on “Living Our Faith, Unlocking Action”. Reservations are appreciated so either call Esther Harman, Nancy Winberg or the church office. Bring a friend or two; we hope to see you there!

Boy Scout Meatball Supper on October 22nd

Boy Scout Troop 13 will have its 31st Annual Meatball Supper on October 22nd. Serving will be 3:00 to 7:00 and it will be served family style with the boys from Troop 13 as your waiters. Cost is $8.50 and tickets will go on sale October 9th during coffee fellowship. If you have any questions please call Rich Pitz.

October Book Club Selection: Sarah’s Key

Our book to read for October is Sarah’s Key by Tatiana de Rosnay. In the summer of 1942, the French police arrested thousands of Jewish families and held them outside of Paris before shipping them off to Auschwitz. On the 60th anniversary of the roundups, an expatriate American journalist covering the atrocities discovers a personal connection – one such family formerly occupied her apartment. She resolves to find out what happened to Sarah, the 10-year-old daughter, who was the only family member to survive… De Rosnay’s novel is captivating, and the powerful narration gives it even greater impact. Rally Sunday 2011 is September 18th

Summer may be winding down and we will soon be living “Back to School”, but there’s also ANOTHER great “Back to…” that occurs this time each year. “BACK-TO-CHURCH … SUNDAY SCHOOL/CONFIRMATION/YOUTH GROUP”.

For many of you this is no “Back to… ” at all. You never miss a Sunday. But for many of us, this is kind of a “New Year” with hopeful resolutions for a shift back into “The Spiritual Lane.” For some children, youth, and adults this might even be a FIRST TIME to encounter the “good stuff” church has to offer. Whatever your situation … WELCOME! Our doors and hearts are OPEN! Please “make yourselves at home”. You’ll be glad you did!

Please join us Sunday, September 18th for Rally Sunday. This will be a time to register for Sunday School and Confirmation, meet the teachers/leaders and participate in a fun activity. Registration will be held in the Fellowship Hall, after worship. We do not have a registration fee for Sunday School/Confirmation/Youth Group, but have a “Gathering Supplies Tree” for needed items. Come take a look Rally Sunday at the “leaves” and see where you might be able to help out, sign up to bring a snack, or chaperone.

Schedule Your Church Directory Photo Appointment

Our Savior’s is publishing a new pictorial directory through Olan Mills. Beginning on July 17th, you will have the opportunity to schedule appointment times online. Each family/household that comes for photography and portrait viewing at the church will receive a complimentary directory and $25 credit towards the purchase of additional Olan Mills portraits.

The photography dates will be August 24th-27th and September 14th -15th. Our goal is 100% participation in creating a directory that reflects the vibrant church community we have built here at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. If you have any questions, speak with Scott Swedeen or Betty Linse.

2011 WCC Fashion Cornucopia Tickets Available

Tickets for the 2011 Fashion Cornucopia are now available in the church office. On Saturday, October 29th, we will have two great shows of fall & winter fashions along with an exquisite meal prepared by our own CFS Team (and served by the handsome OSLC Men’s Club). This show is a fundraiser to help meet on-going expenses and to increase exposure and donations for the WCC. Tickets are $30 each or a table of eight for $200.

Bike To Church on May 15th

Bike to Work Week is May 14-20! As part of Bike to Work Week, we also encourage community members to bike to their places of worship.

Bike to Work Week is a national event to encourage safe biking for fun and transportation, and to encourage motorists to share the road with bikes. The first Bike to Work Day was organized by the League in 1956 and has expanded into Bike to Work Week and National Bike Month.

The Driftless Region Bicycle Coalition’s Bike to Work Week activities are in support of that effort in the Driftless region by promoting: bike to work, to school, to worship and to shop. The mission of the Driftless Region Bicycle Coalition is “getting more people on bikes, more often by advocating for bicycling infrastructure and a dynamic bicycling culture.”

Book Selection For May & June: The Devil in the White City

The OSLC Book Club will be reading the book, The Devil in the White City : Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America, by Erik Larson in May and June. Kirkus Review describes this book as “a vivid account of the tragedies and triumphs of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago and the concurrent depravities of America’s first serial killer.”

We are able to get many copies from the public library in a book kit. Our discussion will be held at the end of June. Please join us!
